Preface

Pursuant to the Government's decision to make Gujarati subject compulsory in all schools in the state of Gujarat, the Gujarat State School Textbook Board, Gandhinagar is pleased to present the Gujarati (Second Language) Trial Textbook for Class- 1 to 12.

This time, for the first time, the textbook of Class-1 to 12 Gujarati (Second Language) has received the full support of GCERT, Gandhinagar and the experts nominated by them. This book has been written and consulted by experts. Before the implementation of this book, a comprehensive review has been done and the book has been finalized by incorporating the suggested amendments.

Sufficient effort has been taken to make the presented textbook quality, child-friendly, interesting and creative. The Society expresses its gratitude to all those who have provided the study material contained in this textbook. Every student studying in a Gujarat school is expected to become conversant with the Gujarati language. Your suggestions regarding this textbook are welcome.

Language learning is the teaching of language skills. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are divided into different learning outcomes. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of the learning outcomes while teaching the lesson or while conducting self-study. The lessons have been selected in such a way that the students are interested. Along with this, appropriate models for teaching language skills have also been placed in it. Also the self-examinations after the lesson are mainly aimed at the learning outcomes of the language. Similarly, activities and games are aimed at language learning outcomes. Where possible, the results are also numbered, which will be useful. Here are some guidelines to follow.

Just as important in language-learning as teaching the lessons in the book, and perhaps even more important, are the lessons, activities, and homework to acquire language skills. The lessons in the book are meant to interest the children in different forms of language and to expose them to fine examples of language. Their vocabulary grows from it. They are introduced to effective sentences and their ideas and imaginations are stimulated, but the ability to put all this into practice requires self-study, activities and reading, writing and speaking.
